A fetal wellbeing scan can be performed after approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy and is a great way to ensure that all is well with your growing baby. All it involves is a simple abdominal ultrasound scan, which is perfectly safe for both mother and baby.
For example, an ultrasound scan can accurately assess how much your baby is likely to weigh at birth. In some cases, the size of your baby at this stage of pregnancy can also be a sign of problems with the placenta and if your scan finds any cause for concern we will of course refer you to your hospital consultant for any necessary medical treatment.
During your scan we will:
- Assess the size of your baby
- Check that your placenta is working properly
- Ensure that there is a normal amount of fluid surrounding your baby
- Look at the position of your baby
- Generally monitor your baby’s current health and wellbeing
For the vast majority of parents, a fetal wellbeing scan is the perfect way to put anxious minds at rest, leaving you free to look forward to the happy day in confidence.
