Doppler scans work by measuring the speed of red blood cells moving along the blood vessels. Blood flow is a useful indication of fertility because your organs need oxygen (transported in the blood) to stay healthy.
For example, we can use a Doppler scan to measure the flow of blood to the uterus and ovaries. During the second half of the menstrual cycle, blood flow to the uterus increases in fertile women – to make it easier for an embryo to implant itself in the womb. Similarly, the flow of blood increases in your ovaries just before ovulation – if everything is working as it should be.
Abnormalities in blood flow can also be an indication of conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome – which can affect fertility. We will usually offer you a Doppler scan as part of our fertility testing service.
