Sadly, around one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage, although the majority of miscarriages occur during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Although staying in good physical health whilst you are trying for a baby and during pregnancy can help, there is very little you can do to prevent a miscarriage once it has started – it simply is one of those things unfortunately.
Not surprisingly therefore, it’s very natural for a woman to worry about miscarriage, especially during early pregnancy. If you’re worried, or you’ve had symptoms such as bleeding, spotting or pain, an ultrasound scan is the most effective way of seeing your baby and finding out what’s happening.
If you have had a miscarriage, the scan will also show what’s happening in your body – for example, if some of the products of conception remain in your womb your hospital consultant may recommend further treatment.
Rest assured, symptoms do not necessarily mean you’re having a miscarriage so a scan can also put your mind at rest that all is fine with your baby. As antenatal experts we can help you through this anxious, and possibly very upsetting time, in a relaxed and caring environment.
